well you said, maine…start at the bottom and work your way up the coast…key places to visit in order from south to north:
york/oqounguit beach area–long sandy beaches, low key feel
old orchard beach–7 ,iles of sandy beach, boardwalks, bars, thousands of people
portland–maine’s city, right on the waterfront, great place to visit
popham beach state park–mix of sandy and rugged maine coast
boothbay harbor–small fishing village, lots of tours leave from there
bar harbor/acadia national park–mountains meet the sea and bar harbor is a very cool small coastal town
machias–now you’re really leaving the whooplah behind, its the real maine
eastport/lubec– eastern most points of the US

..in bewteen these places you’ll see some of the most dramatic coastline in the world and some very nice quaint coastal towns

For the island michigan in general is an old mining baron mansion town very unique.

Theres Lancaster/York Pennsylvania with amish country. Lots of Amish people, and home to tons of factories. Hershey factory is nearby too, and some pretzel brands factories.

Minnesota has lots to offer—Arkansas is also a very folksy place to visit. North or South Dakota have a culture all their own and aren’t hardly “touristy”. Sounds like a great sort of vacation plan.
